Tim Tenhave wrote:Rick, you commented to me and others that you have concerns with the Budcom as it sits now. I would much rather see a working BudCom model get ironed out on the School side before thinking of moving that model to any other body in our Town. I realize that "working" has a different definition to different people. I understand from serving on boards, committee, councils it is also in the end a bit of compromise and censensus. Let's take a moment first and try to reach some compromise on the model to see if it can become viewed as having value to a super-majority.

Tim, I agree that that committee should work to "win over" (for lack of a better term) those who voted to eliminate the committee but since the voters have now twice voted to keep the committee even in it's current form that several people do have concerns with, I think the voters should be given the choice to have it over see the town. If we're going to have a bud com then we should have a true bud com that has oversight over ALL budgets impacting property taxes.

I think, with only 16 votes deciding the question, a recount is appropriate

Thanks Lynn but after considering it, probably best to just let it go and make the best of it this year.

Lynn, were there any write-ins to fill in the vacancies in the Budget Committee? Otherwise the committee has 4 open seats to fill, probably by asking for letters of interest and holding public interviews.

The School District Clerk, Pat Heinrich, has provided me with a copy of a 2003 list of meetings of the (then) Municipal Budget Committee. It is interesting in that it shows that the School Board’s budget was available to the BC on or before January 7. The Deliberative Session was held at the beginning of March in 2003.
I do not recall, and there is no evidence in this schedule, that the School Board had difficulty in meeting the early January date for their first presentation to the BC on January 7. Here is the list of meetings.

Can anyone explain what it was that was different in 2003?

George W was president, the Red Sox still hadn't won a World Series, and housing was still a good investment. :)
