Teachers stage fake gun attack on kids

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.

The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip.

"We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said.

But parents of the sixth-grade students were outraged.

"The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them," said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip.

The teachers should be criminally charged, not just "disciplined."

That is insane! Those teachers should be charged with criminal endangerment of minors. Someone could have gotten hurt.

And teaching them to hide in a dark room? I think we've seen that time and time again and it doesn't work. Look at the couple mass school shootings we've had so far. There are clusters of bodies where students grouped together and hide.

Based on a quick review of Tennessee law, it looks like they ought to be able to be charged with class A misdemeanor assault by "[i]ntentionally or knowingly caus[ing] another to reasonably fear imminent bodily injury," perhaps to the tune of 69 counts, along with a conspiracy to commit assault.

Any New Hampshire teachers who might be contemplating a similar "drill" should bear in mind RSA 631:4-I(a) - "A person is guilty of criminal threatening when: By physical conduct, the person purposely places or attempts to place another in fear of imminent bodily injury or physical contact;" and RSA 629:3, conspiracy, which has the same penalty as the crime involved in the conspiracy.
