Moving the Bedford Tolls to Nashua

Postby RBarnes » Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:48 am

Story on WMUR this morning. Here it is for discussion...

http://www.wmur.com/travelgetaways/18936044/detail.html

Hillsborough Rep. David Campbell, D-District 24, said the Department of Transportation has a long-term plan to remove the tolls from Bedford and install them in Nashua. He said the goal is to get as much revenue as possible from cars crossing the border from Massachusetts.

That's a great idea, lets spend millions in building and removing them.

The rebuild many years ago in Nashua was intended to house tolls - but they never got put in place - I thought I recall seeing a story in the paper where items such as underground access was put in - but never used.

In short, it wouldn't be as expensive as a total redesign would not be needed.

Just an additional FYI about this story, David Campbell is a rep from Nashua.

The tolls were not installed because Bernie Streeter was on the govenors Executive Council at the time.

The gasoline tax is going up 15 cents. Why do we need tolls anymore?

We have cover on the gasoline tax as MA is proposing a 19 to 25 cent hike.

Article in today's telegraph about tolls and possibilities of moving them or not...

Way too much to cut and paste so I'm just leaving the link. One quote I'd like to draw attention to though:

Lynch opposes any gas tax increase.

Lynch would raise auto registrations each year by $10, increase highway fees and raise all turnpike tolls except for the ramp tolls in Merrimack.

Any discussion of how that might impact Merrimack tolls? It would seem that if they were to stay under this plan, they would at least all have to move to northbound on-ramps/southbound off-ramps. Otherwise you would pay twice (although I wouldn't put that past our state legislators).

Not to mention now-councilor Deborah Pignatelli was a Representative at the time as well. She filed a bill complaining about the impact toll booths have on the scenery, among other things.
