Nanocomp begins production in new Merrimack center

Nanocomp Technologies Inc. has begun production in its new Advanced Manufacturing Center in Merrimack and will retain its Concord facility for research and development.

The developer of carbon nanotube-based products has a strategic partnership with DuPont and has contracts with military and private customers.

Peter Antoinette, president and CEO of Nanocomp, said the firm has completed the first 30,000 square feet of its planned 100,000-square-foot expansion.

“We are light-weighting aircraft, protecting soldiers and first responders and police with light-weight armor,” Antoinette said. “That helps provide better protection and requires less energy both for personal energy for somebody walking around with that as well as on vehicles and aircraft.”

There are currently 38 employees in Merrimack and 18 in Concord, with three shifts running in Merrimack.

The facility, funded in part through investments from the Defense Production Act Title III, will manufacture high-performance products for the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA and a number of major commercial corporations.

The new facility manufactures high performance, strong and conductive CNT-based sheet, tape, wire and yarns. The Department of Defense has designated Nanocomp's materials as “critical for national defense.”

Over the next year, Nanocomp expects to add more than 50 manufacturing, sales, marketing and technical positions at both the Merrimack headquarters and its technology research center in Concord.

Applications for Nanocomp's carbon nanotube-based products include:

--Lightweight replacement for copper wires.

--Shielding for electro-magnetic interference (EMI).

--Non-metallic electrodes for lithium and other batteries.

--Heaters for aerospace and automotive applications.

--Thermal transfer solutions for space and aviation.

--CNT-based airplane wing exterior layers that de-ice.

--A smart phone case that is strong and light and also contains an embedded antenna simultaneously serving as a thermal/electrical backplane as well as an EMI shield.
