My company just aquired (bought) ILS on Cotton Road in Nashua. We were flush with money to spend it and looked like a good fit.

This excerpt from an article by Dave Anderson in the Forest Society News caught my attention. Thought I'd pass it along to others who might be feeling a little overwhelmed just now. We in Merrimack are blessed with several lovely parcels on which we can wander aimlessly for hours, with no cost but a pair of good boots. Grater Woods, Horse Hill, Wildcat Falls/80 Acres, Wasserman Park and other places of pleasant diversion await us. Enjoy.

"This winter of our economic discontent threatens to overwhelm human spirits. Please don't let it break yours. Solace awaits you…outdoors.

Now may be the best time to partake of affordable therapy: take a quiet walk. Get some healthy exercise in the fresh air, outside the stale confines of cabin fever and the television news. Breathe. Contemplate. Reconnect."

HP announced earnings yesterday, and it was obvious that the downturn is impacting the bottom line, even though we've limited costs and have have products that are getting great analyst reviews. The upside was that no company-wide layoffs are planned (but some adjustments in spot areas), but the downside was an across-the-board pay cut to bring expenses more in line. The interesting thing was that it was a graduated scale of cuts, all on "base pay" (not impacting the "variable" amount for performance bonuses, etc) - from 20 percent for the CEO down to 5 percent for normal salaried folks, with other variants in between (here's an article with some of the info ... technology ). Keeping fingers crossed that we stay stable and the work our group is doing continues to grow revenue like it has so far!

Last week PC Connection reported disappointing sales results for the quarter ended December. Revenues were down 10% year over year and Pat Gallup said this was a reflection of economic downturn and a decline in IT product demand. The last comment makes sense because that's who they sell their product to.

Has anyone heard if PC Connection is taking measures with their employees? (ie. pay freezes, pay cuts, layoffs)

We have some major employers in our town that have an impact on our local economy. It would be nice to hear from posters who have insight into how these companies impact us.

Read a couple weeks ago that Motostar Tires bought the FW Webb old warehouse.
This is great news that 30 employees are coming into our town and even better news that a vacant warehouse will be occupied. The buildings in that industrial area are very depressed looking. Hopefully this company will help rebuild the business base. Small, but a positive start.

Merrimack Stone does a good business from their building back there.

Does anyone know when the courthouse will break ground and what the timetable for opening is? Will there be any job opportunities for local employees during the building phase? Will the town need to provide police details if so, will we get revenue from the state on that? the building is significantly bigger than the old courthouse, does anyone know if there will be a need for cleaning services? This might be an opportunity for a local cleaning business.

The Courthouse will be talked about tomorrow night at the Planning Board meeting. I don't have answers for your other questions right now. I suspect they will have needs for local services but some may need to have special security concerns. Not sure, though.

The good news is the larger courthouse will bring more people to Merrimack who will possibly enjoy the small businesses in the area.
And during construction, workers will also likely spend some money in town.
