Error creating new session

In the past week, fairly consistently each morning, I've received the error below when trying to access the site. Has anybody else experienced this?

As someone who works with databases, it would appear that each day a little more space is being added to the table that keeps track of sessions or old sessions are purged out (or perhaps a little of both) in order to keep things going for that day.

Is there a longer term fix planned?

Here's a synopsis of the problem.

http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article.php?article_id=42

At one point I had implemented the "Automatic table emptying script" suggested in the article. However that got overwritten in one of the upgrades to the forum software to patch security holes. Even still the session table should not be filling up daily unless the site is getting hit hard by automated scripts attempting to register spam accounts with registration information designed to increase their google page rank. I have managed to keep those code changes in place during the past few software upgrades.
