Road closure

Postby Davis Powell » Tue Jun 15, 2010 9:42 pm

I was on McQuestion this afternoon heading towards the Middle School when I saw a sign (BIG one that is usually on the highway) saying that Turkey Hill will be closed next week.

First of all, this sign was on McQuestion past Turkey Hill and second - what part of Turkey Hill?

And then the obvious question - why?

Maybe the Turkey Hill Bridge project starts next week?

I assume (and will try and confirm) that the closure is to take care of the sink hole that developed during one of those big rain storms. I don't have addresses but its near the MVD Well.

Confirmation found on the Town's front page (website):

http://www.merrimacknh.gov/node/1565

The emergency replacement of the culvert located near 30 Turkey Hill Road is scheduled to begin on June 21, 2010. Turkey Hill Road will be closed for approximately 5 days to facilitate the repair. A detour route will be set up utilizing McQuestion Road, Baboosic Lake Road, and Joppa Road Extension - See attached map for the detour route.

During the work it is expected that one of the two water lines will need repairs, causing water to be out in the Pilgrim Ave and Beacon Drive neighborhoods. The outage would be between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Effected homes will be notified by the Merrimack Village District.

Please refer questions on the project to the Department of Public Works, Highway Division at 423-8551

With details on the detour:

Does anyone know when DPW plans to do final paving over this new culvert? Seems like 3+ weeks would be enough time to get a paving company out there. The bump is pretty bad in the southbound direction.

Same company will be doing the area over at Executive Drive (so I was told) but I'm not sure when.

I seem to remember several years ago the town had a bunch of projects, and they all stayed unpaved until the last one was done, and then the paving company came in and did them all at the same time - something about more money savings that way. I cold be wrong, though...

That may be correct. The latest paving update on the town website says: "Paving operations have begun. The contractor will begin by shimming the roads as needed, followed by raising of drainage and sewer structures, and then the final overlay." While the Turkey Hill project is separate from the general townwide paving schedule (which is where this statement is from), it does sound like all final overlays will be done last, so that may include Turkey Hill. Perhaps it is more cost effective to bring specific equipment into town as needed for each phase of paving.

One other thing about these types of patches is that the DPW has recommendations between when the work is completed and the final layer of pavement . In other words they are not allowed to put the top layer on after they complete the work under the roadway. If its done too soon, the earth has not settled enough. With this dry spell, odds are its not going to hold over the long run anyway (just a guess on my part).
